Welcome back... sort of!
Bonjour, tout le monde!
I hope that everyone is being safe and staying healthy in these unprecedented times. I'm hopeful that things will return back to normal in the near future, but for the time being, I thought I would pass on some curriculum materials that you and your child can use at home.
We have used an excellent resource from the Waterloo Catholic District School Board during our social studies and science classes that offers free access to ebooks, videos and more. You can find the resource by clicking the link below:
http://vlcguides.wcdsb.ca/home/curriculumguides
Before March break, our class started our science unit on Strong and Stable Structures. You can find a curriculum guide for this unit of study on this website by going to the dropbox for Science and Technology -> Grade 3 -> Strong and Stable Structures (located on a tab at the top of the screen). There are also some resources for mathematics and social studies that you are encouraged to explore.
Below, I will offer some ideas for assignments that your child can complete during the extended break. Please note that these assignments are completely optional and will NOT be assessed or included on your child's report card.
Assignment ideas:
Science:
Have your child select a famous structure and complete a research project on his/her chosen structure. Some things to include in the research could include...
- when was the structure built?
- what materials were used in the structure's construction?
- is it a strong and stable structure? How do you know?
- what are some possible loads ("charges" in French) that this structure could support?
Some possible presentation methods could include: Google Slides presentation, Word Document report, video of an oral presentation or a bristol board presentation. Feel free to share your child's work by emailing me at [email protected] (or, if you have access to Google Drive, feel free to share your child's work with me!)
Math:
Measuring Area
Prior to March Break, we had been talking about measuring area and perimeter using non-standard units and standard units. Have your child select his/her favourite book and estimate and measure the area of the book's title page using a non-standard unit (e.g. paper clips, sticky notes, coasters, cereal pieces, etc.). Make sure that the objects used for measuring the area are all the same (e.g. not mixing paper clips and sticky notes) and that the objects touch one another when covering the book. Change the unit of measurement to see if the area of the book changes!
Perimeter
Have your child create a Minecraft character on graph paper (see left for an example) and have him/her calculate the character's area and perimeter.
Remember, area is the amount of squares coloured in and the perimeter is the distance AROUND the figure. Area is measured in square units whereas perimeter is measured in regular units.
If your child needs more instruction on this, please watch the videos below on area and perimeter from Kahn Academy.

French journal entries
Before the break, your child was given his/her "Cahier d'ecriture" (writing notebook). Your child can write a journal entry every other day to give me an update on what he or she has been doing over the break. Please keep in mind that journal entries should have...
- the date at the top of the page
- transition words (En premier, ensuite, puis, après, deuxièmement, troisièmement, finalement)
- punctuation
- capital letters for proper nouns and at beginning of sentences
- AT LEAST 5 sentences
There is no limit to the amount of journal entries your child can write! Amusez-vous! :)
Math Prodigy and Boukili
As always, please use Math Prodigy and Boukili on a daily basis to reinforce math and French language skills. Information on how to access these apps is included on the "Homework" section of this website.
Take care of yourselves and stay healthy!

March news
It's hard to believe that it's already March! The year is flying by and we have lots of things happening throughout the month of March. Please keep the following days marked on your calendars:
Friday, March 6th: P.D. Day -- no classes
Friday, March 13th: Carnaval! Please make sure your child is dressed warmly for this event as it will take place outside.
March 16th - March 20th (Inclusive): March break -- no classes
Friday, March 27th: Non-uniform day/Crazy Sock Day for Down Syndrome Awareness
Extra clothes
As the spring weather arrives, so too does mud and puddles. We have had many students coming in from recess with muddy, wet clothes. Please ensure that your child has a change of clothes at school in case of accidents as the office will not be supplying clothing.
Kleenex/Hand Sanitizer
A big THANK YOU to families who provided our class with paper towels! We are also asking families to bring in a box of Kleenex and a bottle of hand sanitizer as the cold and flu season is in full swing. Thank you for helping to keep our class clean and germ-free!
Vacations during school
We have lots of families taking vacations during school time. Please make sure to inform the office of vacations that last more than 5 school days in length. I will be assigning vacation journals as homework, along with the homework that we are doing throughout the month (choice board, Boukili, Math Prodigy).
Bonne relâche!

January News
I hope that all of our classroom families had a restorative and joyous Christmas break! We have lots of things happening in our class this month. Please make a note of the upcoming dates in January:
January 9th/16th/23rd: Swim to Survive. Please see below for important information about this program.
January 14th: Angels Awards Assembly
January 22nd: New Year Liturgy
January 24th: P.D. Day - no classes today
Swim To Survive
On the first day back from winter break, permission forms will be sent home for the Swim to Survive program. This program is designed to help students acquire and practice potentially life-saving skills when in the water. The program is offered completely free of cost to all grade 3 students in our school board. Please note that permission forms MUST be returned before Thursday in order for your child to participate, so please sign and return them as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that students will be changing in public change rooms and other patrons may be using the change rooms at the same time as our class. Students must bring their own bathing suits and towels. Goggles are optional, but please no snorkel masks!
Homework
The homework program is changing for the remainder of the year. We will no longer be doing weekly dictées. Instead, we will now be using homework choice board calendars. Instructions for the calendar are pasted to the inside cover of the "Devoirs" duotang that your child will be taking home. Please submit the completed homework calendar on Friday, January 31st for a chance to be entered into our monthly homework draw!
I wish all of our classroom families a very happy new year! Bonne année!

December News
We are now in the season of Advent and we are eagerly anticipating Christmas! December is a short but busy month. Please make a note of the following upcoming events:
Monday, December 16th: Dress rehearsal for Christmas play
Tuesday, December 17th: Parent presentation of Christmas play at St. Justin's Parish at 6:30 PM
Friday, December 20th: Non-uniform day - wear your pyjamas to school, carol sing
Canned food drive
The St. Anthony Christmas elves are back at it again! Throughout the month of December, we will be collecting canned and non-perishable food goods for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Please consider sending in donations to help those in need this Christmas season. The last day for donations is Tuesday, December 17th.
Change of clothes
If you haven't done so, please send a change of clothes for your child in case of accidents. Our field is very muddy at this time of the year and students are coming in from recess with muddy clothes. The office is unable to supply a change of clothes for every student, so it is advised that students bring their own.
Snacks
Just a reminder that snacks must be nut free. We have many students in the school who are severely allergic to nuts. Thank you for your help in this matter!
I hope that all of our classroom families have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me using the form on the left-hand side of this webpage or email me directly at [email protected]
Joyeux Noel!

Words of the week (Etude de mots)
I have put up our French word lists for our Etude de mots under the section "Words of the Week" on the left-hand side menu. Please double-check your child's spelling of the words that he/she has copied from class. Merci! :)
Homework
Dear parents and guardians,
This week, we are starting our word study (étude de mots) and homework program. The homework program consists of the following components:
Word study program (étude de mots)
Every week, we will be studying a new French phoneme. As a class, we will create a list of ten words that include the sound of the week. Students will write these words in their étude de mots duotang and bring it home on Monday. Students can complete the two sections remaining on the page at home throughout the week (writing the words using blue for vowels, red for consonants and creating three sentences using a few of the words of the week). Please have students return the red duotang every Friday.
Boukili
The second component of the homework program will be using the app Boukili. This is a great resource for improving French reading fluency and comprehension. I am asking each parent to create a profile for their child on the app. You can access Boukili by clicking on the link below:
https://boukili.ca/en
You can use the following log in information to access the app:
Log in: [email protected]
password: 20192020
You will be prompted to enter your child's first name and date of birth. From there, your child will be asked to read a passage to asses his/her reading level. Please have your child read two books every night on the app.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me using the contact form on this web page under the Contact section or send me an email directly at [email protected]

SeptEmbre 2019
Bonjour! Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope that all of our families had a relaxing and restful summer break. Grade 3 is an exciting year in your child’s academic career and I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year!
This webpage will be updated frequently to keep you up to date on what we’re doing in class as well as provide information about school-wide activities. Website updates will be communicated through your child’s agenda so please make sure to check the agenda on a daily basis.
St. Anthony is a certified Eco School and is committed to protecting the environment. Because of our status as an Eco School, we discourage the use of paper for home/school communication and instead will be using this class website to keep our parents up to date about what’s happening at the school. We will also be using an app called School Messenger to communicate with our parent community (more information about this app can be found on the left sidebar of this website under the FAQ section.)
Please take some time to read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section to help prepare your child for the upcoming school year. I have also made a survey to get to know your child better. This information will not be shared and is meant to help me plan around your child’s strengths and needs. This survey is on the left sidebar under “Student surveys”.
Merci! Bonne rentrée!

This webpage will be updated frequently to keep you up to date on what we’re doing in class as well as provide information about school-wide activities. Website updates will be communicated through your child’s agenda so please make sure to check the agenda on a daily basis.
